FWP Elk Management
The Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks manages elk for all Montanans. Their overarching elk management principles, guidelines, Landowner incentive programs, harvest reports and the 2004 elk management plan can all be found below.

Landowner Incentive Programs: Montana is very generous to landowners who live and deal with elk. There are a large number of landowner incentive programs that already exist. Check them out and see if one of these programs fits your needs as a landowner.
Elk Management Plan Guiding Principles: In 2020, a group of individuals was selected to help the agency define some guiding principles relative to the new Elk Management Plan. You can find those principles here.
2004 Elk Management Plan: Finding the plan on the FWP website can be tricky, so we made it easy for you! Click this link to see the current elk management plan from 2004. That's right, we're managing elk under a plan that was put in place before wolves were back under state management, and before elk herds in eastern and central Montana even reached carrying capacity.
